Sperm morphology refers to the size, shape, and structure of sperm cells. In a healthy male, a high percentage of sperm will have a normal head, midpiece, and tail—each essential for successful fertilization. Abnormal sperm morphology means a significant portion of sperm have irregularities in one or more of these areas, which may affect their ability to reach and fertilize an egg.
While one abnormal sperm does not prevent conception, a high percentage of irregularly shaped sperm can reduce the chances of natural conception. Abnormal morphology can hinder the sperm's motility (movement), its ability to penetrate the egg, or both.
